Psalm 71.1-6,17-18

“Be my rock of refuge, to which I may continually come.” Continually. What a word! We do not need the Lord as our refuge sporadically, occasionally, sometimes… but continually.

Job 8.1-22

For younger children read at least Psalm 71.5 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also ask “What do we hope God will do for us?” There will be many answers and you can make sure the big ones are there by going to the 3rd article of the Apostles Creed – I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

For older children you could focus on Job 8.4-7 and ask, “Was Bildad right? Were Job’s latter days very great?” As it often happens in this conversation, Job’s friends say things that might be technically correct, or here even a foreshadowing of the end of the book. But, they keep talking as if they know what God has hidden. They don’t know what we know – that God and Satan spoke about Job. They make the mistake of explaining what  they have no business explaining.

John 4.27-45

For younger children read at least John 4.34 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also talk about how much more satisfying it is to serve others than it is to be served. Both can be good in their own way, but to serve someone else is to do the will of God (Philippians 2) and that is why we exist.

For older children you could marvel with them about this huge change – “Jesus had already put aside ethe division between Jews and Samaritans by speaking to the woman. Now the Samaritans asked Him to stay, something He did not experience in Jerusalem.” The Lutheran Study Bible

Write it on the heart verses – Psalm 71.5 and John 4.34

Small Catechism for the week: Second Article (Part 1) – I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord.

Small Catechism question for the day: How do you know Jesus is true God? John 1.3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
