Psalm 127
This is one of the ‘Songs of Ascent’ that were sung on the way up to Jerusalem, to the Temple. These psalms are good to sing on the way to church or before reading God’s Word. How does Psalm 127 help you prepare to hear from God?
Job 1.1-22
For younger children read at least Job 1.21b “The LORD gave; and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also remind them that if we have Jesus we can be content no matter what else God gives or takes away.
For older children you could read and discuss this – “Job’s actions display the depths of his grief. But rather than curse God, Job blesses and worships Him. He displays no regret, as though he suspects his loss is the result of sin by someone in his family. He sees God’s hand at work in his suffering.” The Lutheran Study Bible

John 1.1-18
For younger children read at least John 1.1 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also remind your children that Jesus is the Word through whom all things were made; Jesus is God through whom we get the hope of eternal life.
For older children you could discuss this – “By taking on human flesh, God the Son comes into the world He created. He graciously brings deliverance from spiritual darkness and authorizes believers to become God’s children. Those who do not receive Christ by faith remain in darkness. Christ, the true light, has overcome the darkness, and He promises His forgiving grace to you and all people.” The Lutheran Study Bible

Small Catechism for the week: Table of Duties – To Widows – The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. – 1 Timothy 5.5-6
Small Catechism question for the day: What does godliness plus contentment equal? 1 Timothy 6.6-8 – But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and[c] we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
