Psalm 66.8-12,16-20
God tests us like silver. That test is not all that pleasant but after we go through it we learn better to have the high praise of God on our tongues.
Job 31.1-12,33-40
For younger children read at least Psalm 66.19 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also talk about how we can be confident God hears us because he loves us in Jesus.
For older children you could discuss this note – “Job will learn that God has His purpose in suffering. There is no way for humans to see behind the mask of God, to know God’s will apart from Scripture. He reveals His gracious will through the Word, not by reason or experience.” The Lutheran Study Bible
John 9.24-41
For younger children read at least John 9.38 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also talk about how faith in and worship of Jesus are primary goals for life. We can do these whether rich or poor, famous or unknown, healthy or sick, etc.
For older children you could discuss this – “Jesus gives physical and spiritual sight – faith – to a man born blind, though the Pharisees accuse Jesus of violating the Sabbath and remain spiritually blind. We are all born spiritually blind, unable to see our sin and unwilling to do things God’s way. But through Baptism and the Word, God has delivered us form the domain of darkness through His beloved Son and has enlightened our hearts to know and follow Him.” The Lutheran Study Bible
Write it on the heart verses – Psalm 66.19 and John 9.38
Small Catechism for the week: The Third Petition Thy will be done on earth as in heaven. What does this mean? God’s good and gracious will certainly is done without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when he breaks and defeats every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh, which try to prevent us from keeping God’s name holy and letting his kingdom come. And God’s will is done when he strengthens and keeps us firm in his Word and in the faith as long as we live. This is his good and gracious will.
Small Catechism question for the day: How is God’s will done in our lives? How else is God’s will done in our lives? 1 Peter 1.5 …who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
