Psalm 69.1-4,8-9,24,29-30
Zeal for his Father’s house consumed Jesus. In these words the Spirit cultivates in us the same zeal. Where is the Father’s house for us?
Job 5.1-27
For younger children read at least Psalm 69.30 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also think about modelling for them silence when someone is suffering. A child’s suffering over a lost toy is immense for the child. There can be a time to help the child see “It’s just a toy. It is not that big of a deal.” But don’t miss the chance to model empathy, sympathy, compassion, holy silence, so that they might learn to do the same when a friend in the future is suffering in a way that is immense no matter one’s age.
For older children you could read and discuss this – “when you reach out to a friend or family member, do not give answers that simply bandage deep hurts. Listen carefully to the sufferer and learn to share the pain. God does use adversity to discipline His people, as Eliphaz pointed out (5.17-18; cf. Heb 12.1-13). In the midst of trial, we might doubt God’s love for us. But the cross shows us the measure of God’s love.” The Lutheran Study Bible
John 2.13-25
For younger children read at least John 2.19 and repeat it so that it might be written on the heart. You might also remind and ask “Jesus was talking about his body. When did he raise up his body in the three days?” Easter Sunday! If you are looking to keep the little one busy and off a screen do some Easter crafts, like coloring eggs which are a picture the Church has used for centuries for the resurrection.
For older children you could discuss this – “With holy zeal, Jesus cleanses the temple, which has been turned into a marketplace, and He predicts His resurrection to those questioning His authority. When we disrespect God’s Word and sacred things, He calls us to repentance. Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection reveal God’s heart, which is zealous for those He Loves.” The Lutheran Study Bible
